Book Discussion Group Selects Titles for 2009

BDG Celebrates Ten Years of Reading and Talking

On October 21, the Book Discussion Group (BDG) held its monthly meeting.  It was an especially busy meeting, because we celebrated our 10 anniversary with cake, confetti, and sparkling cider.

The PPL staff also revealed the results of the election for the books we'll be reading in 2009.  For the first time, the group has chosen to read an equal number of fiction and non-fiction titles.  The book with the most votes (12 out of 14) was Little Heathens.  All of the titles we're reading received 7 or more votes.  Those attending October's meeting got to choose the order in which the books will be read.

With all the preliminaries out of the way, the group settled in to discuss October's selection, The Last Town on Earth by Thomas Mullen.  The Last Town on Earth takes place in Commonwealth, Washington during World War I.  Commonwealth, a logging community, chooses to close its town to outsiders in an attempt to avoid an influenza epidemic.  When a lost soldier attempts to enter the town, two guards make a choice that causes the townspeople to rethink human values of love, patriotism, community, family, and friendship.

In November, BDG will read At Home in Mitford by Jan Karon.  This is the first book in the series about Father Tim, an Episcopalian priest, and his life and work in Mitford, North Carolina.

BDG meets every third Tuesday in the Perry Public Library meeting room from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.  All are welcome to attend.  Stop by the check-out desk to register.
